Update on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Impact on UW Post-docs

As announced earlier, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued in May the final ruling that mandates an increase in the minimum salary for postdocs. However, recently a federal court injunction has suspended the new requirement causing some uncertainty as to how the university would react.

We are happy to inform all postdocs that this uncertainty has been positively resolved — the UW leadership has officially confirmed that the planned changes would indeed go forward. As such, all current postdocs (Senior Fellows, Senior Fellow-Trainees, Research Associates, Research Associate-Trainees, and Visiting Scientists) will become full-time employees and must earn a minimum monthly salary of $3,957.00 ($47,476 annual income) by no later than December 1, 2016. In addition, all new postdoc appointees must be appointed as full-time employees and must be paid a minimum monthly salary of $3,957.00. More information can be found at the UW Graduate School and at Future Research.

At UWPA, we look forward to the announced changes and we are continuously monitoring the implementation of these changes throughout the university. We ask postdocs to report any problems encountered regarding the implementation of these changes to UWPA and also to the relevant university offices, namely the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Office of Academic Personnel.
