Details about PIP Training

The Pronunciation Improvement Program (PIP) at the University of Washington Speech & Hearing Clinic (UWSHC) is held  in Autumn and Winter quarters.  Screenings for applicants are conducted during Summer quarter.

The UWSHC is a teaching clinic; all training is conducted by graduate students under the direction of a licensed and certified supervising speech-language pathologist (SLP).  Assessment and training is videotaped for teaching purposes, and sessions may be observed by students in the department.

After assessment, applicants are generally accepted into the program unless the applicant's:

§ accent is so mild that intelligibility is not significantly reduced

§ English language skills are not sufficient for comprehension of the program

§ objectives or needs are not a good match for this teaching clinic.

PIP training consists of about 16 individual sessions and 2 group sessions.  The individual sessions occur twice a week during business hours; the group sessions occur in evening hours (after 5:30p.m.).  All participants are expected to attend all sessions, in order to get the most out of the training.

Participants generally work on speech sound differences (vowels and consonants), stress placement and intonation.  Listening activities are also included in the training and homework activities.  Participants are expected to practice on their own between 30-60 minutes per day during the program in order to see the most change.

Participants receive a set of workbooks and are expected to bring an audio-recording device to each session.  The UWSHC has good quality tape-recorders available for a refundable deposit of $25 cash, but any recording devices, such as laptops or digital recorders, are acceptable.
