How to Apply to our Program

Residency positions for the general surgery program at the University of Washington are matched via the National Resident Matching Program.

UW Department of Surgery participates in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Please refer to your medical school of graduation for Student Workstation Kits, and refer to the ERAS Web site. Students and graduates of foreign medical schools should view our Certificate Program for International Physicians. This is a pre-requisite for foreign medical school graduates who seek residency positions in our program. Canadian applicants should contact the Canadian Residents Matching Service.

Our application deadline is October 31st.

Selection of Candidates to be Interviewed

Application review is done during the first two weeks of November and all invitations for interviews are sent out in this two week period (i.e. by November 15th). We interview approximately 80 candidates each year. Although we receive applications from many hundreds of well-qualified candidates, it is not possible to interview all who apply. Each application is reviewed in its entirety with an interest in diverse candidates demonstrating overall academic excellence, proven leadership ability, work experience, personal character and career development potential.

Applicants doing a surgical sub-internship at the University of Washington are offered an interview at the time of their rotation to assist them in curbing travel-related costs. They are also welcome to take advantage of our formal interview dates.

Interviews

Interview dates for the General Surgery Residency Program have been scheduled for the following dates:

December 12, 2009
January 9, 2010
January 23, 2010

We do not offer individual interviews outside of the scheduled group interview sessions.

Any candidate who is invited to interview must contact the surgery education office to confirm their acceptance of the interview offer by the R.S.V.P. date.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Gina Coluccio, Surgery Education Coordinator at (206) 543-3687; or email coluccio@u.washington.edu.

Workforce Diversity

The University of Washington and the Department of Surgery are deeply committed to expanding the diversity of our programs and meeting the medical needs of all people. To this end, we strongly encourage applications from individuals with disadvantaged backgrounds and/or those who have future interest in serving underserved populations.

Resources

We highly recommend the online guide "So, You Want To Be a Surgeon" to all surgical residency applicants. Known for many years as "the little red book", this manual, written by two University of Washington surgery faculty members, has been adopted by the American College of Surgeons.
