TBI Forum Series
The TBI Forum is a quarterly evening educational program for persons with TBI and their friends, family members and caregivers, held at the UW and Harborview Medical Centers. The forums provide current information on a variety of topics relevant to the TBI community, such as maintaining good nutrition, return to work, assistive technology, recreational activities and recovery research.

35 people attended our first TBI Forum event at the University of Washington. Dr. Kathleen Bell and Dr. Jo Ann Brockway from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington were on hand to answer questions and to discuss the basics of what a brain injury is and what people can expect to encounter as they begin to recover after a brain injury. The TBI Model System at the University of Washington is dedicated to promoting the best health and recovery in persons with traumatic brain injury by using information gained from cutting edge research in clinical care. Employment and Finances After Brain Injury

Dr. Robert Fraser and Karen ball from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington discussed vocational services and the basics of employment and financial issues after a TBI. You can view Dr. Fraser’s slide show entitled Employment and Finance Decisions / Resources After Brain Injury. You can also visit the Positive Solutions web site to learn more about benefits and benefit planning for individuals with disabilities. Positive Solutions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides information to individuals with disabilities, their families, and service providers. Current grant contracts include providing services for clients in King and Kitsap Counties.
Assistive technology (AT) Strategies in Working With TBI

Curt Johnson from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington covered from duct tape to computer access. This program provided an overview of low tech "5 minute solutions" as well as a review of several computer access devices and software applications. Also discussed were choosing AT, how AT should focus on functional outcomes and available resources.
Moving from School to Adult Life: What Parents and Young Adults with TBI Need to Know

Dr. Denny Hasko from the Center for Change in Transition Services at Seattle University provided information about pediatric TBI and recovery and accessing community and school resources. The session paid particular attention to the transition of pediatric TBI patients from hospital to school and from school to the community. On July 22nd, 2009 the University of Washington Traumatic Brain Injury Model System hosted its first annual TBI Artists Show. We would like to invite you to view the wonderful art displayed at this show titled- Recreating Me: Exploring & Healing through Creative Expression. Share the artistic vision of the Traumatic Brain Injury community. This is a multi-media display of art created by people after a traumatic brain injury. The display includes visual, musical, written and spoken creations. Traumatic brain injury affects over a million people a year in the United States and is the signature injury affecting our military personnel in the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. It has been called "The Silent Epidemic". We hope this display of artistic talent will give voice to those affected by TBI and their families. A panel discussion on recreational activities after Traumatic Brain Injury. Our panel of discussants included Michael Figueroa Program Coordinator for Seattle Parks Specialized Programs, John Stevenson from Outdoors For All and Patricia Gohl a Recreational Therapist at Harborview Medical Center.
