Neurosonology fellowship
Physicians
specializing in cerebrovascular disease are invited to spend six months
to one year in the Cerebrovascular Laboratory pursuing their research
interests, studying the mechanisms responsible for stroke, and learning
advanced ultrasound diagnostic techniques.
Visitorship program
A formal visitor
program has been established to share knowledge and interest in cerebrovascular
ultrasound with physicians and technologists. Visitors can be accommodated
for several days to one month. The program includes a syllabus, access
to a specialized library, observation of testing, instruction in technique
and interpretation, case study reviews and practice interpretation,
attendance at the weekly interdisciplinary stroke conference and, for
longer stays, hands-on testing of normal subjects and patients with
neurological deficits.
Preceptorship
Program
The University of
Washington Department of Neurological Surgery's Cerebrovascular Laboratory
has a national and international reputation for excellence in developing
and applying the newest technology in cerebrovascular ultrasound for
clinical and research purposes. We welcome visitors from around the
world to join us for a formal preceptorship and share in our experience.
The length of stay ranges in length from one or two days to a month.
When coming to the
Cerebrovascular Lab visitors should have specific goals in mind so that
we can tailor each visit to meet those goals. We offer a varied experience
to maximize learning during the visit.
1.
Exam observation: Both in-patient exams and
out-patient exams may be observed pending patient consent.
2. Case
study review: We offer our educational case study library for review
of a wide range of interesting exams from the basic to the advanced
level.
3. Interpretation:
Instruction in the interpretation of case studies and observed studies.
4. Literature
review: We maintain and continuously update a library consisting
of over 900 journal articles regarding cerebral blood flow and noninvasive
testing. Visitors are welcome to review any of these. We also maintain
a library of books on diagnostic ultrasound and cerebrovascular diseases.
5. Hands-on:
This will be dictated by the visitor's experience as well as our time
and patient volume.
6. Conferences:
Visitors are encouraged to attend in our weekly conferences. Within
the lab we have a monthly quality assurance conference in which we discuss
interesting or unusual pathology and correlate the TCD or carotid duplex
findings with clinical and radiological findings.
Neurosurgery
Grand Rounds: Wednesday mornings, 7-8 am, with varied topics, sometimes
related to cerebrovascular disease.
Stroke
Conference: Friday afternoon, 4-5pm. This is a multidisciplinary
conference (Neurosurgery, Neurology, Vascular Surgery and Radiology)
discussing interesting stroke cases and optimum patient management.
