Faculty and Staff News: Recent publications and awards

Erin Casey (Social Work) was one of three UW faculty members honored with the 2010 Excellence in Research Award from the Society for Social Work and Research for their article, “Screening for Domestic Violence in Public Welfare Offices: An Analysis of Case Manager and Client Interactions,” published in the journal Violence Against Women. Casey and the other two professors, UW Seattle’s Taryn Lindhorst and Marcia Meyers, will receive their awards at a ceremony in San Francisco in January.

Two books by Rich Furman (Social Work) will be released in the next several months: He edited "Social Work Practice with Latinos: Key Issues and Emerging Themes," due out in early December, and authored "Social Work Practice with Men at Risk," due out in April. Altaf Merchant (Milgard School of Business) recently received the Best Paper Award for 2008 from the International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing. His paper, “Nostalgia and Giving to Charity: A Conceptual Framework for Discussion and Research” (co-authored with John B. Ford) was published in the journal in February 2008.

Merchant also presented two papers this month: “The Use of Fantasy in Food Advertising Targeted at Children: A Content Analysis” (with the Milgard School’s Gregory Rose) at the Conference on Consumer Culture and the Ethical Treatment of Children at Michigan State University, and “Nostalgia: Agendas in Research” at the UW Bothell Research Seminar Series.
