New year, new quarter

Jan. 3, 2011—Welcome back, UW Tacoma!

It's a new quarter. And a new year. And a new decade, sort of, depending on how you count it. We hope everyone enjoyed the break (if you got one). Here are a couple of things you may have missed in the last few weeks:

Dream Award nominations: There’s still time to nominate a member of the UW Tacoma community for the Dream Awards, which will be presented at the annual Unity Breakfast next Monday, Jan. 17. Awards will be presented to students, student organizations and external people or groups that have made significant contributions to UW Tacoma in the areas of diversity, social justice or civil rights. Nominations are due by Wednesday. Learn more and submit a nomination here.

Phil Heldrich memorial: A memorial service for Dr. Philip Heldrich (IAS), who died of cancer in November, will be held this Friday, Jan. 7, at 4:30 p.m. in Philip Hall. Everyone is welcome. Learn more about the memorial here.

2010 milestones: The News Tribune wrapped up the new year with an article on the highlights (and lowlights) of 2010. Two UW Tacoma milestones made the list (our 10,000th graduate and our 20th anniversary) and they illustrated the article with a lovely picture of student graduation speaker Ashley Walker (who’s now the newest member of the Advancement Office staff).
