Computing Workshops and Online Curriculum

Service Description: 

UW-IT Workshops
UW Information Technology provides free computing workshops in a classroom setting as well as access to online curriculum. Custom workshops also are available.

Microsoft IT Academy Online Courses
UW Information Technology (IT) provides access to two sets of Microsoft online training resources:

  • Microsoft Digital Literacy computer skills training
  • Microsoft E-Learning courses

The Microsoft E-Learning portfolio consists of online multimedia courses on many information techinology (IT) topics including:

  • Microsoft Office 2010 applications
  • Windows Server 2008, Windows XP Professional, Windows 7, Internet Explorer 7.0, Exchange Server 2007, and SQL Server 2008.
  • SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET, and ASP.NET 2.0; Visual Studio .NET and Visual Studio 2005; .NET Framework 2.9; and more.

Walk-In Workshops
Computing workshops are offered quarterly at no charge in these topic areas:

  • Catalyst Web Tools
  • Computing Fundamentals
  • Digital Audio
  • Digital Video
  • Web Publishing
  • Databases and Spreadsheets
  • Document Creation
  • Graphics and Presentations

Walk-in workshops are designed and taught by our student instructors and are offered in a fun, casual atmosphere. To attend, you will need a current student, staff or faculty UW NetID. Registration is optional.  However, if a workshop fills, seating preference will be given to registered participants.

Custom Workshops
Custom workshops are available upon request. If you meet all of the following criteria there is no charge for the workshop:

  • The workshop is sponsored by a state-funded program or department.
  • We are currently teaching this workshop curriculum (please see http://uw.edu/lst/workshops for current workshop        schedule).
  • The workshop occurs during regular business hours, or during regularly scheduled class times.
  • There are eight or more participants.
  • The workshop is scheduled for two hours or less.

If you do not meet all of the above criteria, you may arrange a custom workshop for a fee.  Please email lsthelp@uw.edu for details.

Online Curriculum from Workshops

Many of the walk-in workshops have online curriculum you can use and review online at any time. Please go to http://uw.edu/lst/workshops and select the workshop you attended or are interested in to view the online curriculum.  There is also an "online curriculum" section on the page, which includes curriculum for non-current workshops

"How-To Guides" for Catalyst Web Tools and other computing-related topics are available online at http://uw.edu/lst/help.  

Microsoft IT Academy
The Microsoft IT Academy subscription includes additional benefits that may be available upon request.  For a description of the benefits see Microsoft IT Academy Program Benefits.

UW students; UW faculty and staff may attend on a space available basis.

Availability: 

Walk-in workshop classroom instruction is provided in Mary Gates Hall and Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Schedules vary, but classroom instruction generally is offered afternoons, Monday through Friday, with some weekend offerings. Most courses require current student, staff or faculty UW NetID. Microsoft IT Academy

  • This service aims to be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, having zero downtime, however delivery of training materials depends on a vendor.
  • Customer requests will be acknowledged within two business days.
