Service Description: 
Web services allow for easy programmatic access to UW institutional data and automated processes. Most Web services have standard and consistent programmatic interfaces so working with one Web service is the same as working with another. Web services are available for many data domains such as student, financial, groups, HR/Payroll, person directory, etc.
 
The UW Web Services Registry provides a list of Web services that developers can use, a place to advertise and communicate web services, and a place to request new services.

The UW Application Portfolio, https://sharepoint.washington.edu/oim/app-portfolio, is a catalog of administrative applications in use throughout the UW. The portfolio is a resource for UW developers to find other developers and learn about information systems at the UW. It contains information about departmental systems as well as the enterprise administrative applications.
 
The UW Application Portfolio is incomplete; if you are the owner or operator of administrative applications that are not listed, please request access so you can add your applications to the portfolio.

Linux Shell Environment

UW Information Technology provides UW faculty, staff, and students access to standard applications and tools to meet various computing needs.  Customers can create accounts that give them access to clustered Linux servers that support various functions including:

  • Email
  • Programming and scripting
  • Interactive gateway to campus resources
  • User installed software

Availability: 

Linux shell services are available from any Internet connection.  Services are set up with a clustered server environment  so small system failures will not cause a service outage.   System is not designed for quick recovery from a major disaster.   Occasional downtime is scheduled for periodic upgrade of servers.

Price: 

This service is included in the Technology Recharge Fee for faculty and staff and funded by the Student Technology Fee for students.

A basic storage level of 1 GB is provided for faculty, staff, and shared accounts. Students are provided 300 MB of storage.

Additional data storage for faculty and staff and shared accounts is available for a fee. To increase your storage limit, go to the Manage Your NetID Resources page at https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/?disk, where you can enter a budget number and set the amount. The rate is $.35 per GB per month.

Service Description: 

Version control for software developers. UW Information Technology uses Subversion (SVN), an open-source version control system with a wide variety of free clients (including Unix, Mac, and Windows). Subversion manages files and directories over time and can access its repository across networks. This allows it to be used by people on different computers. Backup of files and directories is included.

IMAP - UW Software Toolkit

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a method of accessing electronic messages kept on a mail server. The IMAP - UW Software Toolkit is a set of software written at and distributed under an open-source license by the University of Washington.  While still available, the UW is no longer actively developing IMAP.

 

The IMAP - UW Software Toolkit includes the following:

  • c-client library: an API (application programming interface) used to build email clients and servers, including support for IMAP, POP3, SMTP and NNTP protocols, and for local mailbox file access on Unix and Windows
  • UW's POP2 (ipop2d), POP3 (ipop3d), and IMAP4rev1 (imapd) servers
  • mailutil: a utility program that helps manage email mailboxes (both local and IMAP/POP3/NNTP)
  • dmail: an MDA (Mail Delivery Agent) for use with procmail
  • tmail: an MDA for use with the system mailer (e.g., sendmail, postfix, etc.)

The IMAP - UW Software Toolkit is provided as open-source software. The UW is not able to provide detailed support for this software and is no longer actively developing it. However, there is an active community of users who have mailing lists and support each other.

The Web Publishing service provides:

  • a cluster of Web servers to make your information available to browsers
  • storage space for your Web pages
  • the ability to install Web applications like WordPress, Drupal and others
  • optional database services, site access control and other utilities

Your pages will be published and available at one of these URLs:

You can create your Web pages via a variety of desktop Web authoring tools, build pages using text editors, or install Web applications.

Historically our service availability has been 99.9%. However, since the Web Publishing environment is shared, excessive use of the services by one or more users may degrade performance for others.

A basic disk storage allocation of 1 GB is included for faculty, staff, and shared accounts. Students are provided 300 MB of storage.

Additional data storage for faculty and staff and shared accounts is available for a fee.
