Earth Week at UW Tacoma

Background

Earth Week at UW Tacoma is a result of the 2009 South Sound Sustainability Summit in which students, faculty, and staff agreed that more outreach was needed on campus to inform people of small, everyday changes to make for improving campus sustainability.

The first annual Earth Week celebration proved to be a huge success with over 300 people participating in these events. Click on links below for more information:

First Annual Earth Week (2009):

The greenhouse, Giving Garden, and future Rain Gardens were just a few stops along the way.

Tuesday, April 21st Toxic Tragedies

There was an excellent turnout for Guest Speaker, Arlene Blum, who presented Toxic Tragedies: Balancing Fire Prevention, Human Health and Environmental Protection. Blum is executive director of the Green Science Policy Institute and a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's Department of Chemistry. Blum is a biophysical chemist who has taught at Stanford University, Wellesley College, and U. C. Berkeley, where her research was instrumental in banning two cancer-causing chemicals from children's sleepwear as well as the pesticide DBCP. Additionally, she has played a groundbreaking role in women’s mountaineering. More about Arlene Blum...

Wednesday, April 22nd: Compost Kick-Offand Screening of Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home

Wednesday Evening was the screening of Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home, a feature documentary about how the family household has become one of the most ferocious environmental predators of our time. The film was introduced by its producer, Andrew Nisker, and followed up with discussion and Q&A. More about Garbage!
