Application Procedures

Valle Scholarships are limited to graduate students in programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering or Built Environments. All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, or of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, or Sweden. The deadline to apply is January 15 for Built Environments students and February 1 for Civil and Environmental Engineering students.

Note: Due to the time required for processing applications, international applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to the UW Graduate School by December 15.

To Apply:

1. Create a PDF file to include the following application material and email to vallelog@uw.edu:

A proposed plan of study and research (Statement of Purpose):

Applicants for the Valle exchange program must submit a proposed plan of study and research. You should describe your research and study plans for the exchange period and how this stay will affect your career and other anticipated study and experience which could follow your exchange work. Please discuss arrangements you and your advisor have made with a faculty member who has agreed to supervise your work while at the exchange institution.

College transcripts 

Two letters of recommendation:

Letters of recommendation can be emailed directly from references to the Valle Program.

TOEFL Scores (Nordic students only):

Applicants to the Graduate School at the University of Washington from the Nordic countries must take the TOEFL test. You are encouraged to register for the TOEFL test as soon as possible. Please indicate when you plan to take the test on your application form.

Portfolio of your work (Architecture students only):

Submit a digital portfolio of no more than five examples of original design work, 20 pages max, saved as a PDF file, 10 MB max.

 

2. Apply to the UW Graduate School (unless you are a current UW graduate student):

Complete Graduate Admissions application online:

Upload the required documents (Statement of Purpose, Transcripts, TOEFL etc.) to your UW Graduate Application.

NOTE: Valle Scholarship applicants are not required to submit GRE scores to the UW.

Valle applications must be received by January 15 (Built Environments) or February 1 (Civil and Environmental Engineering) to be considered for the following academic year. Awards include a monthly stipend (approximately $500 per month more than a regular graduate assistantship) plus tuition.
