2010 Pacific Northwest Band Festival

Monday, February 1, 2010 (jr. high/middle schools)

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 (high schools)

The complete 2010 Festival Schedule will be posted here after the application deadline.

The PNWBF is a non-competitive event that serves 27 bands and over 1200 students and their directors each year. Each band performs and is coached by one of our nationally recognized clinicians. Students can also attend master classes given by the UW School of Music faculty. At the end of each festival day, selected students from each of the bands will have the opportunity to play in the final concert given by the UW Wind Ensemble. Ensembles are highly encouraged to stay for the entire day to observe other groups' performances, participate in master classes, and enjoy the final concert by the UW Wind Ensemble.

As a festival participant, your band will receive:

    * A CD of your band's performance
    * Taped comments from our four clinicians
    * Director commentary/video from Frank Battisti
    * Coaching by one of our four clinicians
    * Master classes for your students given by UW Music Faculty
    * A Director's Luncheon with our four clinicians

All events are free and open to the public. We welcome you and your students to come and observe.

For additional information, please contact Vu Nguyen at the UW School of Music at vqn2@u.washington.edu. We look forward to seeing you at the festival!

Read feedback about past Pacific Northwest Band Festivals from participating band directors.

From 2008:

...Adding the fourth adjudicator was a great move and their verbal and written
feedback proved helpful. I heard many directors say they appreciated
the one-on-one time with Mr. Battisti and the recorded comments are the
most meaningful way to critique in my opinion.

Including honor band members on stage with the "big kids" is not only
fun to watch, it makes a lasting impression on those students. This
year I had a horn player come to morning sectionals the next day playing
excerpts from the Holst Suite by memory. He had been on the fence about
signing up for band in high school, but after this experience, he
decided to do what was necessary to make band fit into his schedule.
For this young player, the UW experience proved more influential than
his parents, friends, or band teacher.

I have a new principal at our school this year. She comes with plenty
of experience but very little music background. She attended and was
impressed by the entire event on many levels: students actually being on
a college campus to visualize their future education, performing in a
professional quality hall, receiving on the spot instruction from
experts in the field, working to improve what she thought was a
completed product, receiving written and verbal feedback, and watching
other peer groups go through the same experience. She enthusiastically
shared this information with our school staff and viewed it as a perfect
example of education's "best practices".

From 2006:

The PNWMF was a very valuable musical experience for my students. The master classes, Meany stage, and the top notch adjudicators. Each adjudicator gave great insight and examples for us to visualize from the tapes. To play on a world class stage is a thrill for my kids. The master classes my kids are still talking about.
The lunch with Frank Battisti gave me many things to think about regarding his strong opinions concerning music education and the role of the band teacher.
The festival will be remembered as a highlight of the school year by my students and me.
You did such a fine job organizing such a huge project; I hope you know this is truly of great benefit to many young musicians and teachers.

Once again, we had a great experience at the Festival. The Wind Ensemble sounded great as always, and my kids just love playing on that stage. I've been coming to the festival for the past 4 years, and I plan on coming back again. It's at a perfect time of year for me (right before the kids register for classes for next year) and it's a great field trip.

From 2005:

Big thanks to you and your crew for all the preparation and hard work to make the festival work so well. I now see why so many of my band director friends REALLY look forward to this day.

It is a great experience to have the opportunity to perform in Meany Hall. The Univeristy of Washington Wind Ensemble is always an inspiration to my students to continue playing music.

Thanks again for the great opportunity

Few of us have the opportunity for our annual teacher "evaluations" to be conducted by someone who understands what it is we are trying to communicate to students and how their response reflects whether our teaching was effective. This festival gives us not just one, but THREE takes on how the group performs, the level and effectiveness of conductor-ensemble communication, and what concepts need more or better teaching or reinforcement. The tapes allow adjudicators to tell us exactly what they are thinking as the performance progresses and recommend alternatives. What band director would not relish such an opportunity?

Our students came with the understanding that our adjudicators are expert conductors, musicians and composers. They appreciated the feedback, and were able to view their performance on tape the next day and determine for themselves additional areas for improvement. Without such feedback on-stage from an objective outside experts, often a lot more "convincing" needs to be done to bring performance levels up to potential.

The Honor Band provides our best players the chance to see how they "measure up" to more talented and experienced players, and wets their appetites for opportunities to come as they mature musically. It is an inspiration for which our kids are grateful.

Not many of our students can afford private instruction. Even though we will never likely be one of the top performing groups, this festival provides a fabulous opportunity for our students, and one that motivates them to do even better every year.

PLEASE continue this wonderful program. We who have chaired band festivals know what a headache it can be to put on, but it is SO valuable to our students, and to their communities. Thanks for a great experience. Hope this festival will continue for years to come.

Great UW Wind Ensemble performance as usual. Loved the Redline Tango and the Oboe Concerto especially. My kids really responded positively to the group and selections.

From 2004:

I LOVE bringing my group to your festival. It's a fantastic opportunity and one of the few opportunities for Concert Bands to perform and listen. There are plenty of Jazz Band festivals, but only a few for Concert Bands. The UW Wind Ensemble knocked me out as usual. Have a great time in Japan!

Scott Brown, Roosevelt High School **************************************************************************

I enjoyed all of the day on Tuesday. The Nelson and Maslanka were really enjoyable, and I was blown away by the marimba concerto. Actually, everything was inspiring to me. Great job with the Festival as well as with your band.

Dave Johnson, Shorecrest High School **************************************************************************

Just a quick not to congratulate you on a wonderful festival! We had a great time and really enjoyed playing in Meany Hall. I have listened to 2 of the judges tapes so far, and they are insightful. The CD of our band turned out great! Please thank all your student help and the Meany Hall staff; we were treated very well. Thank you for your kind words about our performance; I really value your opinion. The UW Wind Ensemble performance was stunning; my kids are still talking about it!

Thanks again, Kevin Paustian, Auburn High School *************************************************************************

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your performance tonight. I can't tell you how much it meant to my band to be able to hear a truly outstanding performance like that. While your performance of the Maslanka and Nelson were both outstanding, your performance of Epiphanies brought tears to my eyes! Very Moving!

Thanks again, Mike Van Bebber, Liberty School *************************************************************************

Thank you for putting on the PNWMF, it was such a special experience for my students. For the first time they got to play on a stage instead of a gym, they got to talk with people like Allen Vizutti and Don Immel, and hear the University Wind Ensemble. Have a great trip to Japan!

Stan Yantis, Hawkins Middle School *************************************************************************

We had an absolute blast. The adjudication tapes were the best I have ever received from any festival. We are already putting this event on our calendar for next year!

Mark Wilbert, Tyee Middle School *************************************************************************

We had a great time on Monday and it was a pleasure to hear all the other groups! Thanks for your help!

Craig J. Rine, Curtis Junior High *************************************************************************

Thanks for doing the PNWMF. It is always awesome to attend such a great quality festival. Thanks for having us and for being flexible.
