To be considered for admission into the UW IGERT on Multinational Collaborations on Challenges to the Environment, you must apply for admission to University of Washington Graduate School, and to the Ph.D. program in departments that will support your interests and involvement in this IGERT. Concurrent application is made for admission to the IGERT program, following instructions below. If you are already a graduate student at UW, you can apply directly for consideration to our IGERT, following a slightly different procedure, also outlined below.

Please note that IGERT Fellowships are only open to US citizens, holders of green cards, or those with refugee status in the US.

The final cohort has been accepted for this IGERT therefore we will no longer be accepting applications.

Procedure for students applying for graduate studies at the UW

If you have a bachelor's or masters degree in an appropriate field of science or engineering, you apply to our new IGERT Program by sending your materials (obtainable from your Department of choice) to the University of Washington Graduate School, indicating to which Department you wish to be admitted. Your application will then be considered by your chosen Department in its usual way. Application requirements and deadlines are those of your chosen Department.

There are three additional steps to indicate that you wish to be considered for admission to the IGERT on Multinational Collaborations on Challenges to the Environment:

1) Send us one copy of your complete departmental application packet, including:

Graduate School application materials
Transcripts
GRE scores
Any additional forms/statements/materials required by the Department(s) to which you are applying

Mail your packet to:

2) Instruct each person sending a letter of recommendation for you also to send a photocopy to the above address.

3) With your application, include a cover letter expressing your interest in IGERT. This cover letter, one to two single-spaced pages, should address the following questions:
  • Which topics in our IGERT are of particular interest to you, and how would you like to shape your graduate career to address those topics?
  • Which departments outside of your primary department are you most interested in for collaboration and study?
  • Are there aspects of your career to date that demonstrate your skills and interest in some portion of the various fields subsumed in our IGERT?
  • Are there aspects of your career that demonstrate your commitment to interdisciplinarity and/or international experience?
  • Of the eight partner universities in our IGERT or some other international university or institute approved by you and your PhD committee, which are the 2 or 3 that are of the most interest to you as a site for your international internship and why?
  • What would you bring to the new multidisciplinary, multinational community that is being brought together through our IGERT?
Procedure for students who are already enrolled in graduate school at UW

If you are already enrolled as a graduate student at UW, you need only submit the following sets of materials to be considered for admission to our IGERT.
  • Undergraduate transcript
  • Transcript of graduate courses taken to date
  • GRE scores
  • Short cover letter, addressing the same set of questions listed above for external applicants (see section 3, above)
