alissa.m.harrison@gmail.com Education B.S. Computer Science and Linguistics, University of Washington Graduate Student, Linguistics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Research summary I surveyed the language attitudes towards Mandarin varieties and Sichuanese from 143 college-age respondents. Generally speaking, the Mandarin varieties were regarded more positively than Sichuanese. These results were surprising considering the observed preference to use Sichuanese instead of Mandarin in many situations. However, the results are consistent with research elsewhere in China that shows Mandarin garners high prestige. I conclude from this language attitude survey that Mandarin will likely continue to spread in Sichuan despite the current widespead use of Sichuanese. Poster
