Research summary
During the first quarter I focused on immunobiology course and plant evolution project in Veronica Di Stilio’s lab. What I did in this project is chromosome counting on three species. Basically the procedure is like this, preparing samples, staining with different methods, making slides, observing and counting chromosomes under different types of microscopes, eventually taking pictures of the cells.
In the second quarter I quit the lab and switched to animal behavior field. I realized that the animal study needs many mathematic models and statistical analysis, so I also picked up probability and statistics course in that quarter. My interests in the animal behavior field are the sexual selection and prisoner dilemma theory.
In the last quarter I deepen my study on the interdiscipline between biology and mathematics. That is why I joined in Carl Bergstrom’s graduate seminar on mathematical biology. My favorite course in this quarter is the Genomic Informatics in which I learned many algorithms to deal with the genome sequences. I enjoy the programming and statistics testing in this course.
Highlights
I spent three quarters in UW. It was really a wonderful exchange student experience.
I took a western philosophy course. It really helped me to understand the western culture.
On the holidays I traveled around. The Olympic national park impressed me and gave me many magical and beautiful images for my memories.
