akyllo@u.washington.edu Major International Studies, Chinese Language and Literature, University of Washington Research summary My project regards Sichuan Peppercorn, or "huajiao," which is a unique spice used in Sichuan cuisine, giving it a mouthwatering, tongue-numbing flavor. I traveled to Yangjuan village, to interview the Yi farmers who grow Sichuan Peppercorn as a cash crop, and I also interviewed the wholesalers who buy the crop from farmers and sell it in large cities like Chengdu. In addition, I took a cooking class to learn how the spice is used. I am currently writing a Jackson School of International Studies honors thesis that will investigate the economic importance, as well as the culinary and cultural value, of the Sichuan Peppercorn in Sichuan Province.
