Research summary

Observations in plant selection in public parks and gardens.
During my year in Chengdu, I conducted a survey to better understand the relationship between people and plants in the fast developing large cities of Sichuan.

Survey of sichuan flora as garden plants.
I collected plants, seeds and herbarium specimens of wild plants with potential horticultural merit. Specimen plants and seeds were brought back and grown for evaluation and some were accessioned for Washington Park Arboretum collections.

- Interspecific breeding and embryogenesis of lilium hybrids
- Cultivation of rare chinese woodland plants
- Identifying horticultural myths and common practices
- Propagation protocols for woody and herbaceous ursery stock
- Micropropagation of orchids and ornamental garden plants

Highlights

Being accepted into the UW/Sichuan Program and living in China for an entire school year.

Joining world renowned plant explorer, Dan Hinkley, on a plant collecting expedition in NE Sichuan, China in the fall of 2004.
