Submitting Your URL to Search Engines
Once your project's site is finished and online, you can submit the URL
or domain name of the site to search engines so that they can index it.
Search engines only return the sites included in their indexes, so submitting
your site can help people using keyword searches find your site. Submitting
your page to an engine, however, does not guarantee that your Web page
will be included in the engine's index. If your site is included in the
index, it still may take several weeks for your site to appear online.
Before you submit your project's URL, collect the following information
that search engines commonly request: descriptive site title, site URL,
keywords, and e-mail address. Submit this information to different search
engines by filling out the online forms that each engine provides. Below
are links to some popular search engines' submission pages:
Besides submitting the above information about your site to search engines,
you can also improve the way your site is indexed by including META "description"
and "keyword" tags in your HTML Web pages. META is an HTML tag
that provides information about the Web page that can be used by a search
engine when it is building its index. For more information, see our discussion
of META tags.
