Hugo von Hofmannsthal is born in Vienna on February 1. His father is a wealthy banker
1890
At the age of 16 Hofmannsthal publishes his first poems; becomes acquainted with Richard Beer- Hofmann, Felix Salten, and Arthur Schnitzler at Café Griensteidl
1891
His drama Gestern is published under the pseudonym of Theophil Morren; meets Stefan George who will publish quite a few of his poems under the pseudonym of Loris
1892
Begins to study law at the University of Vienna

Passes the first Staatsexamen in law, joins the military for a year
1895
Begins to study philology of Romance languages, Das Märchen der 672. Nacht is published
1897
Completes his dissertation, switches from poetry to drama which results in a fall-out between him and Stefan George

Meets the composer Richard Strauss
1901
Marries Gertrud Schlesinger, gives up his plan to become professor of philology of Romance languages and decides to pursue a career in writing instead
