Alfred Polgar is born Alfred Polak on October 17 in Vienna, the youngest of three children
1895
Editor of the newspaper Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung, at first covering court and parliamentary issues and later moving to the culture section
1899
Polgar leaves the Leopoldstadt and moves to the 9th district
1904
Works for the Wiener Sonn-und Montagszeitung, a liberal newspaper which resents Karl Lueger
1905
Starts working for Siegfried Jacobsohn’s journal Die Schaubühne, in which Polgar publishes most of his theater reviews; also publishes Goethe. Eine Groteske in zwei Bildern and Der Petroleumkönig oder Donauzauber
1908
Publishes his first book Der Quell des Übels
1914
Changes his name to Polgar
1914-18
During WW I Polgar primarily works at the War Archive with several short stints at the war front, publishes anti-war essays in the weekly paper Der Friede
1925-33
Polgar spends more and more time in Berlin, has his most productive years

Marries Elise Loewy

Loses his Austrian citizenship, signs a one-year contract with Metro Goldwyn Meyer, emigrates to flee the Nazis
1940
Arrives in New York, travels to Hollywood in order to work as a script writer
1943
Publishes in several American journals, moves back to New York
1945
Becomes US citizen
1949
Travels back to Europe where he settles down in Zurich
1951
Receives the Austrian Preis für Publizistik
1955
Polgar dies at the age of 82 on April 24 in a hotel in Zurich
