actress She was a famous Italian actress born in a family of actors in 1858. She is looked upon as one of the greatest actresses of history. Duse's reputation as an actress was founded less on her "creations" than on her magnificent individuality. In contrast to the great French actress she avoided all "make-up"; her art depended on intense naturalness. Her appearance in the Carlstheater provided the young Hugo von Hofmannsthal with the most powerful theatrical impression he had received up to then. One of the roles that she played there was Henrik Isben’s “Nora.”
