Active Community Environments are places where people of all ages and abilities can easily enjoy walking, bicycling, and other forms of recreation. Priority recommendations include utilization of urban planning, transportation policy and infrastructure changes to promote non-motorized transportation, as well as enhancement of safety and perceived safety of communities.
Growth Management Act Amendments Awareness Grows

The 2005 Growth Management Act Amendments require cities and counties to include a bicycle-pedestrian plan in their Comprehensive Plans and to incorporate land use approaches that will encourage more physical activity. Several activities make it easier to comply with the Act:

  • workshops
  • model goals
  • model policies
  • technical assistance
  • Four workshops were held around the state this Spring and Summer to inform local officials about the requirements. WSDOT, in conjunction with the Washington Coalition to Promote Physical Activity (WCPPA), provided model goals and policies to meet the new legislation along with recommendations for further implementation. WSDOT Highways and Local Programs staff are now available to provide technical assistance to any local governments that need to add these components to their plans.

Target Audience: Local government planning officials throughout Washington

Evaluation: Almost 200 people attended the sessions. Evaluation forms were collected and tabulated at each workshop.

Partners: WA Department of Health; Regional Transportation Planning Organizations; Department of Community, Trade & Economic Development

Lead Agency: The Washington State Department of Transportation provides technical assistance to local governments to help them develop bicycle and pedestrian plans as part of their Growth Management Act Comprehensive Plans.
