Schools, families, and communities can work together to encourage active lifestyles. To achieve this objective, priority recommendations include adoption of school-based curricula and policies that provide quality, daily physical education for all students, encouragement of policies that provide K-12 students with opportunities for physical activity outside of formal PA classes, and provision of opportunities to replace sedentary behaviors, like TV watching.

Partnering to Prevent Childhood Obesity through Policy Change

The Children’s Alliance and several partners including the Comprehensive Health Education Foundation, Seattle Foundation, Public Health Seattle & King County, Washington Dental Service Foundation, Washington Health Foundation, and Washington State Department of Health are working together on a strategic planning process that will help identify the policy vision, participants, structure, and resources for a multi-year childhood obesity prevention policy advocacy campaign in Washington State. The goal is to create state policy change that improves the nutrition and physical activity environment for children and youth in Washington.

Target Audience: Children and youth, particularly low-income children and youth and children and youth of color

Evaluation: An evaluation plan has not yet been developed but this will be a key part of the strategic planning process.
