Schools, families, and communities can work together to encourage active lifestyles. To achieve this objective, priority recommendations include adoption of school-based curricula and policies that provide quality, daily physical education for all students, encouragement of policies that provide K-12 students with opportunities for physical activity outside of formal PA classes, and provision of opportunities to replace sedentary behaviors, like TV watching.

The descriptions below illustrates what organizations and communities are doing to support priority recommendations to increase physical activity for children.

This pilot program for elementary schools across Washington state seeks to get more children walking or biking safely to school. The specific, quantitative objectives for this project are to have the Bicycle Alliance assist up to 15 schools in developing and implementing a Safe Routes to School plan in 2004.

Target audience: Elementary or middle school teachers, administrators or PTAs who ultimately will put in place plans that impact the children at their respective schools.

Evaluation: We will track how many students actually start riding or walking to school, and how many of the schools incorporate bike safety lessons into the students' curriculum.

Partners: The Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) provided the funding to make it possible for the Bicycle Alliance to take on this project. The web-based program we will use to develop the Safe Routes plan was designed and is being offered by colleagues from British Columbia. The Department of Health (DOH) was, at the time of this submission, looking for funding to make a stipend available to each school for their participation in the program.

Lead agency role: The Bicycle Alliance promotes bicycling for health, recreation and transportation.
