To achieve the objective for breastfeeding of infants and toddlers, the priority recommendation seeks to assure that health care settings, child care facilities, and worksite environments are breastfeeding friendly.

The description below illustrates what organizations and communities are doing to support priority recommendations to promote and support breastfeeding.

The goal of the project is to increase duration rates for breastfeeding by increasing awareness and support for breastfeeding among child care providers. The objectives are: 1) Provide consultation, training and support to licensed child care centers and family home care providers to implement best practices to support and encourage breastfeeding; 2) Convene a community workgroup to identify the components of a "Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Program".

Target audience: Child care center and child care family home providers.

Evaluation:The impact of the trainings will be measured by evaluations completed by participants at the completion of the training. We will not be able to evaluate the impact of the breastfeeding friendly child care criteria until we are able to find funding to support the implementation of the program.

Partners: Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, Child Care Resources, Division of Child Care and Early Learning, DSHS, Seattle/King County Breastfeeding Coalition.

Lead agency role: Public Health-Seattle & King County (PHSKC) is the local health jurisdiction providing public health services for the residents of King County. The Child Care Health Program is a unit within PHSKC and provides services to child care and out-of-school-time care providers throughout the county. The Child Care Health Program combines the disciplines of public health nursing, nutrition, child psychology and health education to work together to provide consultation, technical assistance and training on issues of health, nutrition and safety to child care center providers, child care family home providers, out-of-school-time program staff, park and recreation program staff, and Head Start and ECEAP program staff.
