Washington is the 2nd hungriest state in the nation. To reduce hunger and food insecurity among Washington state residents, priority recommendations include provision of adequate support for nutrition and food programs and improving access to nutrition programs.

The description below illustrates what organizations and communities are doing to support priority recommendations to reduce hunger and food insecurity.

In partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Food Insecurity Taskforce is promoting healthy nutrition and increased physical activity to participants of the local food bank. For National Nutrition Month in March, the taskforce will distribute nutrition tips and recipes in the food boxes. This will continue every month for a year with different tips and recipes.

Target audience: Food bank participants

Evaluation: We will survey participants before and after the distribution about changes in their eating habits.

Partners: WSU Cooperative Extension, Spokane County Head Start/ECEAP/Early Head Start, Sacred Heart Medical Center, Second Harvest Food Bank.

Lead agency role: The Spokane Regional Health District serves as the region's public health leader and partner to promote and protect the community's health by demonstrating and advocating for sound policies, principles, and practices related to health. One of the SHRD's goals is to reduce barriers to meet basic health needs through community mobilization.
