To achieve this objective, priority recommendations include increasing the consumption of vegetables and fruits, assuring that worksites provide healthful foods and beverages, and assuring that K-12 schools provide healthful foods and beverages.

The description below illustrates what organizations and communities are doing to increase access to health promoting foods.



This interactive workshop provided participants with the tools and resources they need to develop their school district's strategy for fundraising by offering healthy food and non-food options. The secondary goal of the workshop was to reduce each participant's concern of revenue loss as districts transition to using healthier foods and non-food items for school fundraising. Additional workshops are planned.

Target audience: School district personnel such as food services, school nurse, administrators/staff, Student Body Officers, DECA staff/students, PTA fundraising chairpersons

Evaluation: Measurement of revenue losses or gains in schools following implementation of new policies in regard to competitive foods.

Partners: STEPS to a Healthier US - Seattle and King County, Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, and the Puget Sound ESD's Prevention Center

Lead agency role: Puget Sound Educational School District provides education and support services to all public school districts in King and Pierce Counties.

Booths set up by suppliers of healthy snack foods attracted food service personnel and others involved with selling or marketing of foods and nutrition education in schools, childcare centers, hospitals, and worksites at the Puyallup Fairgrounds on May 6. Foods displayed had to meet specific nutrition guidelines. Attendees were able to taste food samples and pick up business cards and ordering information.

Target audience: School district personnel such as food services, school nurse, administrators/staff, Student Body Officers, DECA staff/students, PTA fundraising charpersons, nutrition educators

Evaluation: Attendees were asked to fill out a form rating the expo for its relevance and satisfaction in meeting the objectives stated for the event.

Partners: Washington State Department of Health, Access to Healthy Foods Coalition, and Kids First

Lead agency role: The Access to Healthy Foods Coalition works to make healthier foods available where Washington citizens live, work and play.
