Walking School Bus in Skagit County

With the support of Skagit Safe Kids Coalition and a grant from National Safe Kids Coalition, the MVHCP Lincoln Elementary Healthy School Project (HSP) held three Walking School Bus (WSB) events in May 2006. Eighty to 125 students walked to and from school with adult volunteers each day. The WSB utilized a "hub and spoke" format. Volunteers met students at one of three hubs (two church and a city park parking lot), and then walked along a set route to school, picking up additional students en route. To create a festive event, high school cheer squads and a mascot greeted the walkers, a special healthy sack breakfast was served and students registered for prize drawings. Every walker received a t-shirt featuring the new WSB logo. The planning committee was extremely pleased with turnout and how the demonstration went. They have agreed to ramp up the walking school bus from a demonstration event to once a week "Walking Wednesdays," beginning September 13.

Mount Vernon Healthy Communities Project staff have joined with Mount Vernon School District, and City of Mount Vernon to develop a Mount Vernon Safe Routes to School Advisory Committee. Partners include Lincoln Elementary, Skagit Safe Kids Coalition, Skagit Valley Hospital, Skagit County Physical Activity Coalition and the Skagit County Non-Motorized Transportation Advisory Committee.

Participants in the WSB program were surveyed about what they liked about the program and what could be improved. Information was collected about current transportation practices of the students and what parents see as barriers to children walking or biking to school. The latter information is being collected for the second year in order to compare year one with year two.
