With funding from a Public Health Improvement Partnership Grant, Whitman County Public Health offered the Fit Fun in the Summer Sun program for seven child care centers serving school age children during the summer. Participating centers participated in nine weeks of swimming programs funded by the grant. As part of the program, the centers were required to provide 20 hours of nutrition/health lessons and physical activity opportunities. Many centers used Coordinated Approach to Child Health’s (CATCH) Kid’s Club materials and lessons that the grant also helped to subsidize. As a result of the program and related trainings, several centers improved the nutritional quality of menu offerings and plan to continue incorporating physical activity into lesson plans.
