Spokane and Marysville Awarded YMCA Pioneering Healthy Communities Grants

The YMCA's Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) project aims to raise the visibility of lifestyle health issues and encourage and support local communities in developing more effective strategies to promote healthy lifestylesThe PHC project is modeled after existing national efforts including Steps to a Healthier U.S., Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health, and Active Living by Design. Drawing on the experiences of other healthy communities initiatives, seven patterns of a healthy community have been identified as a basis for PHC: practicing ongoing dialogue, generating leadership everywhere, shaping its future, embracing diversity, knowing itself, connecting people and resources, and creating a sense of community.

Since the PHC's launch in 2004, 46 YMCA sites have participated in the project and convened teams of government, nonprofit, and private sector leaders to promote healthy living in their communities. Marysville and Spokane were among 18 communities selected to participate in PHC's 2007 cohort. Each community will form a team of ten leaders who will receive training, technical assistance, and support to collectively mobilize their communities and develop an action plan. Following the planning stage, teams are eligible to apply for implementation funding.
