The purpose of the project was to inform the development of Farm to School initiatives to increase the use of Washington grown foods in Washington's schools. Graduate students of the University of Washington’s Nutritional Sciences program compiled and composed this report as their final project for Nutrition 531 – Public Health Nutrition.
Students used existing data from a 2011 Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) survey to describe the current state of farm to school activities and capacities as well as interest in building stronger programs in schools across the state. They developed recommendations for next steps, promising opportunities and subjects needing further research. In addition, the project team developed five policy briefs for key audiences needed to advance Farms to Schools efforts: the community, WSDA, farmers, advocates, and schools.
