Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children 11–19 years old in Washington. Suicide is second and homicide is third. About 80% of unintentional injuries are preventable. They result from not using seatbelts, helmets, life jackets, or protective sports equipment, and from drinking and driving. Bullying is perceived by school staff, parents, and children to be a major contributor to youth violence. Home life is the other key factor—children who have been abused or witnessed domestic violence are more likely to use violence.
