Human-centric and performance-driven strategies for the built environment

Speaker: Dr. Amy Kim
Institution: University of Washington
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Seminar Date: Thurs, May 21 2020, 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Location: Zoom Meeting

Motivated by the growing concerns about climate change, Amy’s work has focused on the operation and management of sustainable infrastructures. The goal is to improve the indoor environment conditions for occupants while reducing its impact on nature. It often involves the use of various “green” or “healthy” building certifications, which are built on research evidence related to fields such as energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, integrated sustainable solution, and human behavior. In recent years, her interest in developing and adopting human-centric and performance-driven methodologies to enhance the resilience of the built environment has been greatly increased. The derivation of these methodologies is based upon research conducted in several areas, such as indoor environmental quality, building energy use, renewable energy application, and building commissioning strategies. To support and expand the research effort, Amy launched the Sustainable Teams and Healthy Buildings Lab, which employs postdoc scholars, graduate researchers, and undergraduate students. She also developed curriculums related to construction management, healthy building certifications, and sustainability in the global context. This talk will provide an overview of these efforts. In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the talk will focus on her indoor air quality research in campus buildings.
