Renee Byrd wins 2009 Graduate School Medal

Renee with Judy Howard, Jerry Baldasty, and David AllenWomen Studies Graduate student Renee Byrd won the 2009 Graduate School Medal.  The award is given annually to a candidate who displays an exemplary commitment to both the University and its larger community. The Graduate School Medal recognizes the "scholar-citizen" whose academic expertise and social awareness are integrated in a way that demonstrates active civic engagement and a capacity to promote political, cultural and social change.

Renée is a prison activist/ scholar who received her B.A. in Ethnic Studies from Mills College. She has worked as a legal advocate for women prisoners in California around issues of medical neglect and compassionate release for terminally ill prisoners. Additionally, she has done work as a family advocate for youth involved in the juvenile justice system and their families. In the spring of 2003, she began working in conjunction with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights to produce a film entitled, "System Failure: Violence, Abuse and Neglect in the California Youth Authority." Her research interests surround prisons and policing, and the impacts on working-class communities of color, and the possibilities of building a transnational, feminist movement to combat the increasingly global prison industrial complex.

Grads to present panel at national conference

Congratulations to Sharmistha, Nina, and Jaye!

UW Women Studies will be officially represented this year at the 2009 annual NWSA conference.

Sharmistha Ghosh, Nina Kim, and Jaye Sablan designed a workshop titled "Imagining Critical Feminist Pedagogies" that has been accepted for inclusion in the National Women's Studies 2009 conference program.  This year's conference, to be held in Atlanta GA in November, is themed "Difficult Dialogues".

Grad Students Recieve Awards

Renee Byrd, PhC received the Sociologists for Women in Society "Women of Color Dissertation Scholarship".  Sociologists for Women in Society is part of the American Sociological Association.

New Grad Student Sara Diaz received the Bank of America GO-MAP Minorities Endowed Fellowship for 2008/9

4/08 Graduate Student receives Simpson Center Award

Graduate student Dipika Nath received a summer dissertation fellowship for her dissertation on Feral Disorders and Colonial Exclusions. 

A group of graduate students, Women Studies faculty at SPU and SU and Chair David Allen received a small award to support a spring conference on religions and feminisms. 

6/07 Congratulations Alka!

Women Studies Graduate Student Alka Arora will be starting her new permanent professional position this month as Director of Education and Research Programs for the Office of the Associate Vice Provost of Faculty Advancement. Alka will be working with Associate Vice Provost Dr. Luis Fraga on developing and implementing programs to recruit and retain underrepresented minority faculty. She will also be co-directing the activities of the Diversity Research Institute – all while finishing her dissertation! Congratulations Alka!

6/07 Graduate Students receive Simpson Center Awards

Two graduate students have also received Simpson Center Awards: Calla Chancellor and colleagues for "Queer Worlds: A Year-Long Project in Queer Cultural Studies," and Dipika Nath, who will be studying "Critical Animal Studies: Thinking Animals in the U.S. Academy in the Twenty-First Century" with her research colleagues.

The Simpson Center Crossdisciplinary Research Clusters bring together faculty and graduate students from different departments to conduct new and vital research. The Simpson Center typically funds only three to five research clusters per year.

4/07 FLAS Award to Amy Bhatt

Amy Bhatt has won the prestigious Foreign Langauges and Area Studies Award for the fourth year.

"This is a signal achievement," writes Professor Priti Ramamurthy. "It reflects Amy's dedication to the serious study of Hindi. It will enable her to continue her training in language while putting it to use in her dissertation project."

4/07 Nancy Bell Evans Center Grant to Chancellor Sims

Chancellor Sims has been awarded a grant from the Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. The aim of the Nancy Bell Evans Center is to enhance the understanding and vitality of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector through research, education, and community engagement. Chance will be using the grant to investigate "The Impact of Nonprofit Incorporation on Child Rights Organizations in Washington State."

4/07 AAUW Dissertation Award

Women Studies graduate student Kristina McMullen has just won one of the scarce and highly coveted AAUW dissertation awards.

"AAUW reviewed almost 400 applications for Women Studies Fellowships, so this is an honor indeed," said Chair David Allen.

Kristina's research interests include feminism, intersectionality and disability studies. Her previous honors include a1998/1999 Fulbright Scholar in Women Studies, Austria; 2003 Master of Arts, Women Studies Practicum, with Communities Against Rape and Abuse & the Disability Pride Project; and a 2005 Doman Award for Excellence in Teaching.
