On-Leave Status
Each quarter (except summer) you must either register for classes or petition for on-leave status or you will be automatically dropped from the Graduate School. Graduate School rules and procedures for going on-leave can be found at: http://www.grad.washington.edu/Acad/gsmemos/gsmemo09.htm If it is likely that you will go on leave for a subsequent quarter, do not pre-register for that quarter. If you pre-register for classes, you must actively withdraw from them before the first day of the quarter or you will be liable for tuition and fees. On-leave petition cards may be obtained from the Registration Office 225 Schmitz or from the Graduate School, G1 Communications Bldg. The on-leave petition must be signed by the Department Director of Graduate Training (aka Graduate Program Coordinator). You must submit the card together with a fee to the Withdrawal Office, 264 Schmitz Hall, by the 5th calendar day of the quarter in which you begin your leave period. You can apply for a leave of up to four quarters but you can return to active status earlier than scheduled if desired. Returning to active status after being on leave requires only that you register for credits. Students who are on-leave maintain access to the University library facilities and their University e-mail account. On-leave students are not eligible for University Housing, student insurance or financial aid. Readmission after Lapse in Graduate Student Status
A student who has not maintained their registration or applied for an official leave must reapply to the Graduate School according to the same rules and procedures required for the original application. Applications for readmission are not given any preferential status in the admission process. UPON EXPIRATION OF YOUR LEAVE period, you may either petition to extend your leave or, if you wish to enroll, you must file a "Former UW Student Enrollment Application" at 225 Schmitz Hall. |
