Graduate Program Handbook
ONGOING STUDENTS:

Registering for Courses

Before you register for courses, you should first decide which courses you want to take. These decisions are best made in consultation with your Faculty Advisor. It is recommended that you schedule a meeting with your advisor(s) annually to plan your course work for the academic year. For first year students, this meeting should be held as soon as possible after you arrive on campus. In subsequent years such meetings should be held in Spring Quarter prior to the Fall registration period. A description of Women Studies courses is found in the "Permanent Course List" found at:

http://www.washington.edu/students/crscat/women.html

The Program Coordinator may also have a list of courses relevant to Women Studies but taught through other departments. Talk with other students or the instructor of the course to get the real scoop. You can also get additional information about many courses from the "Instructor Class Descriptions" that are linked to many course listings in the Time Schedule: http://www.washington.edu/students/timeschd/ and the Course Catalog.

Graduate courses are typically numbered 500 and above. Graduate students can take 400 level courses except those numbered 499 for credit. If you find a course of interest below the 400 level, speak with the instructor of the course to determine if there is a graduate level equivalent.

Once you have decided upon the classes you want to take, look in the "Time Schedule" for the appropriate quarter to find out the days and times when these classes meet. The time schedule can be found at: http://www.washington.edu/students/timeschd/

Sometimes class conflicts (two classes meeting at the same time) are okay, but ask the instructor to be certain. You should also make note of the classes that need a "course entry code." The course entry code numbers are usually available from the instructor although some, especially for Women 600 and above, are handled by Carol Langdon.

During the academic year you must be registered for at least 10 credits each quarter if you receive a tuition waiver or for at least 2 credits during quarters you are not funded or you must petition for "on-leave" status. Failure to do so will result in being dropped from the University. (Exception: You do not need to register or to go on leave or register for Summer Quarter.)

Registration:

Registration can be done from any location with Internet access to the Web. Registration via the Web is through the Registration option of Student Personal Services on MyUW.

Class Portfolio:

It is extremely important that you keep a file of all the courses you take, especially seminars and independent studies. This file should include reading lists, syllabi, instructor name(s), and the quarter and year each course was taken. This file will be invaluable to you later when you're asked to list the courses you've taken prior to scheduling the General Exam.

Dropping and Adding Courses

If, for some reason, you need to drop or add a course, it is advisable to do this no later than the end of the first week of the quarter to avoid a $20 late registration fee. Dropping and adding courses may be done by using My UW or in person at Schmitz Hall.

Caution: You are only permitted to drop one course after the first two weeks of the quarter during any academic year (September through August) – choose wisely!

How Many Credit Hours

TA's and RA's must register for a minimum of 10 credit hours for each quarter of their appointment. (2 credits, Summer Quarter.)

The tuition charge is the same for 7-18 credit hours. You will be charged additional tuition for credits in excess of 18. Tuition waivers that come with TA and RA positions cover no more than 18 credits per quarter.

Always register for Women 600 (Independent Study/Research), Women 700 (Master's Thesis), Women 701 (Master's Practicum) or Women 800 (Doctoral Dissertation) with the number of credit hours appropriate to your time commitment to your research and individual study. Thus, if you are taking 6 hours of courses and spending half of your time on your research, you would also register for 6 credits of Women 600, 700 or 800. The decision about which course and the number of credits you take should be made in consultation with your advisor and/or independent study supervisor. Since you are virtually always involved in research or independent study, you will often register for one or more of these courses.

Caution: Women 600 credits should be used sparingly after the first year of study. Such credits cannot be applied to most degree requirements.
