Women Studies Majors



Requirements for Students Declaring a Major in the Fall of 2009 or Later:

1.  WOMEN 200 Introduction to Women Studies or transfer equivalent (5 cr.).  Women 200 is a prerequisite for most other Women Studies courses.

2.  Women 299 Women Studies Colloquium for Current and Prospective Majors (2 cr.). (majors only Period I; add codes from advisor Period II,III)

3.  One elective 200-level course in Women Studies or transfer equivalent (5 cr.)

4.  Women 300 Gender, Race, and Class in Social Stratification. (5 cr.) Prerequisite: WOMEN 200.  Women 300 is a prerequisite for the senior capstone and variable credit courses (494, 495, 497, and 499).

5.  One course on feminist theory (5 cr.).  

Select one of the following:

  • WOMEN 206 Philosophies of Feminism 
  • WOMEN 455 Contemporary Feminist Theory (strongly recommended for students who plan to pursue graduate studies).  Recommended: WOMEN 206 Prerequisite: WOMEN  200

Note: if 200-level course is used to fulfill this requirement, it MAY NOT also be used to fulfill the additional 200-level course requirement noted above in #3.

6.  One upper division course focusing on transnational perspective from the following list:

  • 305 – Feminism in an International Context
  • 333 – Gender and Globalization: Theory and Process
  • 339 – Social Movements in Contemporary India
  • 345 – Women and International Economic Development
  • 405 – Comparative Women’s Movements and Activism 
  • 446 – Global Asia
  • 474 – Trans/Gender Queries

7.  WOMEN 497 Internship - (A minimum of 3 credits are required.)  One may take up to 12 additional credits for a total of 15 possible credits. Only ten credits can be applied to the elective upper-division Women Studies credits.  Please see #8 of the major requirements for more information.

Prerequisites: WOMEN 200, 299, & 300.

8.  25 elective upper-division (300-400 level) Women Studies credits. 15 credits must be graded (not CR/NC).  A maximum of 10 credits from our variable credit courses (495, 496, 497, and 499) can be applied toward this requirement.  (Honors Students:  Please inquire about possible limits on number of CR/NC courses you may take.)

9.  WOMEN 494 Senior Capstone (5 cr.)

Prerequisites:  WOMEN 200, 299, 300 and 15 graded credits of Women Studies upper division courses.
