Introduction to Health and Safety Programs

Workplace health and safety programs are not only a good idea, but Washington state law also requires them. Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is the agency responsible for administering and enforcing the Washington State Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) (RCW, Chapter 49.17). Requirements for specific DOSH regulations can be found under the 'Safety' tab on the L&I website.

DOSH regulations apply to your winery if:

  • You hire someone to work for you as an employee, including workers from a temporary agency.
  • You own your own business or you are a corporate officer and have applied for industrial insurance coverage for yourself.
  • You have volunteers working for you who receive any form of benefit or compensation.

DOSH requires several written programs, depending on the nature of the activities in your winery. Most importantly, all wineries are required to have an Accident Prevention Plan. More information on specific program requirements and examples can be found on the following pages:
