About Alene Moris National Education for Women’s Leadership

NEW Leadership is a national bi-partisan program developed by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University to address the underrepresentation of women in American politics. The six-day summer institute educates college women about the important role that politics plays in their lives and encourages them to become effective leaders in the civic and political arena.

Alene Moris NEW Leadership Puget Sound brings together college women from across the political spectrum to discuss the roles of women in leadership and politics. The program exposes participants to new ideas and opportunities as they consider their future careers.

Participants are undergraduate and graduate women representing a wide range of socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds and academic majors.  We encourage applications from non-traditional college students, women of color, and students majoring in fields outside political science.

Addressing Issues of Diversity

Leadership in the 21st century will require the ability to work with diverse groups and constituencies.

Each NEW Leadership class includes students from a wide range of racial, ethnic, educational, political and economic backgrounds. During the summer institute, students interact with people who have different ideas and life experiences. NEW Leadership provides students with a safe space where they can respectfully address issues of diversity and discuss the difficulties associated with leadership in a diverse society.

Developing  Leadership Skills

The NEW Leadership Institute provides valuable training in all areas of leadership. Students learn their leadership style, how to effectively communicate with others, public speaking skills, diversity management, negotiation, and many other skills.

Learning From Women Leaders

NEW Leadership participants are able to network with local women leaders who represent a wide range of political and civic backgrounds. During the Institute, participants hear and learn from women leaders who are actively engaged in changing society.
