In January 1971, Alene Moris and Dorothy Strawn, Dean of women at the University of Washington started Continuing Education for Women, which is known today as the Women’s Center. She later co-founded the Individual Development Center on Capitol Hill in Seattle, a career-counseling center for men and women, which she directed for 14 years.
For over 40 years, Alene has worked nationally and internationally on behalf of women on career and leadership issues in both the nonprofit and business sectors. For her innovative work with men and women in transition, Alene was awarded an honorary doctorate from Seattle University in 1990. Earlier, she received the distinguished alumna award from both her undergraduate college and her graduate university. In June of 1996, she received the coveted Seattle Community Catalyst Award. For her work on behalf of women, the University of Washington Women’s Center established the Alene H. Moris Endowment Fund in 2003.
