Winter Garden Bed M

Besides being one of the largest garden beds, Bed M is also one of the most diverse and interesting. During January when Hamamelis mollis is in full bloom, the fragrance of the bright yellow flowers is almost intoxicating. The winter blooming jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) adds more yellow to the scene and also creates interest with its bright green stems. More fragrance is provided in mid to late winter by the very attractive Daphne odora. The striking purple berries of Pernettya almost glow among the dark foliage of this Chilean plant. For year-round interest, be sure to see Stewartia monadelpha with its white flowers and interesting patchy bark. Also contributing fragrance is the early blooming Sarcococca which has dark, glossy green foliage. One additional plant, seen with pink blossoms in the right photo, is Camellia sasanqua.
