Thomas Swen Friberg Endowed Fund for Student Support

We are very pleased to announce the establishment of the Thomas Swen Friberg Endowed Fund for Student Support. This endowment may be fully funded in five years at $202,500 based on donations totaling $110,000 by Tom Friberg, the potential of up to $25,000 in matching gifts by the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, and by $67,500 in matching gifts from the University of Washington Founder's Initiative. The purpose of the endowment is to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in the Paper Science and Engineering program at the University of Washington.

Bruce Bare, John Hanby, Tom Friberg

"As a UW graduate of both Paper Science and Engineering and Forest Resources, Tom has demonstrated exceptional 'giving back' to the programs that supported him as a student over two decades ago", noted John Hanby, Executive Director of the Foundation. "This endowment will help the College of Forest Resources recruit and educate the next generation of paper scientists and engineers as well as contribute to leading edge research", said Dean Bruce Bare; "we are indeed grateful for Tom's generosity and leadership."

“I was struck some years ago by the generosity of donors who had gone before me and more recently discovered options that make philanthropic giving mutually rewarding — and I realized that I could contribute now rather than waiting.”

— Tom Friberg, PSE graduate, 1976

We are excited and pleased that future Paper Science & Engineering students will be known as Thomas Swen Friberg Scholars, and we are re-energized by the Tom's confidence in the high value of the College and our program.

A word about gifts

Your gifts and participation are deeply appreciated — and there's still time for a 2004 tax deduction...

... you may send your gift direct to the Foundation, or you may direct it to the College, the University, or the Alumni Association. In the latter cases, just designate the gift for the Washington Pulp & Paper Foundation and it will come our way. In all cases, you will receive recognition from both the Foundation and the University ...

... and remember that new gifts are eligible for a 50% incentive match from Dean Bare.
