"Ladies and Gentlemen, that is why we are here today," charged Miles Hewitt, Senior Vice-President Boise Paper and Foundation President; "the Washington Pulp and Paper Foundation is one way in which this industry prepares for the future - creating a steady stream of talent and leadership to take our places as the clock rolls forward into the future. The scope and pace of change will demand that future leaders in our industry be dedicated to the business, with a sound understanding of all its many aspects, be technologically adept, and be capable of managing and leading change throughout their careers."

"We believe the students from this program are the best and most prepared to take on this future challenge."

— Miles Hewitt, Foundation President
and PSE graduate, 1982

May 25 was a sparkling spring day at the University of Washington as over 120 people came together to celebrate successes and look to the future.

Annual Conference Highlights

Our keynote speaker, Kathy Buckman Gibson, Chairman of the Board for Buckman Laboratories, challenged and advised our students, you are the talent this industry needs if it is to move forward in a highly competitive world.

While in school:

  • Understand the context of the business;
  • Seek opportunities for international exposure;
  • Learn about working in a team environment.

Tools and talents to take into industry:

  • Look for opportunities where you can make a difference;
  • Build relationships within your organization;
  • Look for a coach (and coaches) wherever you go to work. Your coach is not your boss or mentor, but a person you go to on a daily basis for help on how things really get done.

Dean Bruce Bare, College of Forest Resources, renewed the 1 for 2 incentive match for encouraging gifts to the Foundation, summarized progress in the College, and referenced the pending change in dynamics in the College as we move forward in seeking 9 new faculty members.
