December 2006

We are pleased to be in touch and share highlights
from an active Fall Term at the University of Washington.

High School & Community College Student Recruiting

Over 96 prospective students attended our Student-Parent Information Nights held in Longview, Spokane, Tri-Cities and Vancouver.  Interest was excellent and led to 14 students accompanied by their parents as guests at our Campus Day on December 2nd.  Several students were unable to attend the Campus Day event due to scheduling conflicts with SAT testing; we are making special arrangements for these students.  Sponsors for the Information Night events were Boise Cascade, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Georgia-Pacific, Harris Group, Hercules, and Longview Fibre.  We extend special thanks to these sponsors and the employees who generously volunteered their time.

At the Campus Day round table, a lively question and answer session was given by our PSE students Cody Hargrove , Adam Cooper, David Nelson, John Salvatier, Lauren Turner, Ryan McMahon, and Larissa Zuk.  Professors Rick Gustafson and Renata Bura answered numerous questions about bio-refining and the future outlook for our pulp and paper mills.

If you have a student you would like to recommend, please get in touch with us or point them to our email:  wppf@u.washington.edu.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

What a great time to be graduating with a Paper Science and Engineering or the dual ChemE degree!  We have been visited by numerous companies seeking both full time and intern and Co-op positions.  Our PSE students have polished their resumes and interviewing skills and have accepted several jobs.

Drew Orthmann sets the standard for Hercules interns.  Each year Hercules Chemical Co, Inc hires about 25 summer interns across North America, and ranks them at the end of the internship.  This year Drew was rated number oneCongratulations Drew!
