2008 Annual Conference and 40 Year Celebration

We invite you to the Washington Pulp & Paper Foundation’s Annual Conference to be held on May 22nd, at which time we will also celebrate the Foundation’s 40th Anniversary!  The WPPF is proud to continue its long tradition of creating a forum for students, faculty, alumni and paper industry members to re-connect and dialogue on issues shaping the industry’s future.

We begin at noon with our luncheon and a brief business meeting.  At our afternoon program, join us for a poster session featuring our students and their projects, followed by a tour of our pilot lab.

Drake,-Miles02At our evening banquet, we will take a brief look at the highlights of the Foundation’s 40-year history and recognize those who have contributed their time, talents and resources to the Foundation.  We are honored to have Miles P. Drake, Senior Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Technology Officer at Weyerhaeuser Company come and speak to us about new opportunities for the forest products industry.

RECRUITING

We are very happy to report that nineteen PSE freshmen enrolled in fall 2007, fifteen of whom are receiving WPPF scholarships, bringing our total undergraduate level to over 60 as we make steady progress toward our five-year goal of eighty undergrads with fifteen graduates per year.

Thanks to our Recruiting Committee, high school and community college recruiting was strong as recruiting teams conducted regional information nights in Moses Lake, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Longview, and Vancouver.  In addition, Campus Day on December 1, 2007 connected several students and parents with our faculty, staff and facilities.  Recruiting has been aided with a growing interest in bio-refining and other pulp mill based energy research being conducted at the University and by the PSE faculty.

This year we received scholarship applications from a wider portion of the state from Lynden to Spokane, the Tri-Cities to Monsanto as well as the standard areas.  We look forward to seeing greater diversity in our student population.

Look for our first ever WPPF Recruiting DVD on our website this summer!

New Endowed Scholarships for PSE Students

The Wollenberg Foundation has had a long history of recognizing achievement of its employees by allocating funds to a named scholarship at the Washington Pulp and Paper Foundation to support PSE students.   At the request of Rick Wollenberg, we are pleased to announce the Robert G. Guide and James H. Stacie Endowed Scholarships.  Both Bob and Jim had outstanding careers at Longview Fibre where Jim was VP of Production and Bob was VP of Manufacturing Services.

“The future of our country lies in the education and knowledge of our young people.”

Bob Guide in his comments at the 2007 WPPF Annual Banquet

Membership

As the number of students on scholarship increases, so does the demand for contributions to the scholarship fund by our member companies.  In fact, the FY2008 budget calls for scholarship spending to increase to outpace our income.  To help offset the deficit and to encourage new membership and existing members to increase their level of contribution, Dean Bruce Bare and the College of Forest Resources have agreed to a new Matching Fund Agreement which will extend to June of 2011 with a maximum match of $25,000.  Thus, the Foundation will receive a 50% match for new membership donations and any increased level of donation from existing members.  Thank you Dean Bare!

In September, the Awareness Committee held its second annual membership telethon which brought in $12,800 in membership renewals, a new membership from Grays Harbor Paper, and grants from BPA and the Nalco Foundation.
