2007 Annual Conference… building on past experience to develop a Great Foundation

About 120 people joined us in Seattle on a beautiful spring day in late May for the thirty-eight Annual Conference of the Washington Pulp and Paper Foundation. Foundation President Mike Roberts presided over the Annual Conference and presented a midterm report card of progress toward the Five Year Plan.  Mike reported progress on all five objectives and expressed confidence in achieving the goals.  Highlights included the Development Committee achieving its goal of increasing the endowment to $3.4 million by June 2008 was actually achieved in May 2007, a year ahead of schedule. Student recruiting had another fine year with 16 new freshmen entering in the autumn term 2007.  The Awareness Committee held the first annual telethon in September and membership contributions exceeded the budget.  A total of ten students graduated: six PSE and four dual degree PSE and ChemE.  These students are highly sought after as over 28 full time employment positions were posted.

Objective 1:  Assist faculty in developing graduates of the Program who are highly attractive to employers.

Objective 2:  Provide a solid financial base to support the Program.

Objective 3:  Evaluate and update the Program to meet future Industry needs.

Objective 4:  Involve alumni and friends in the Foundation and the Program.

Objective 5:  Enlist Industry and University leadership in the Program.

 Evening Banquet

Attendees of our annual banquet enjoyed opportunities to meet our students and faculty, reconnect with colleagues, and celebrate the successes of the Foundation.

Duane McDougall, our keynote
speaker, candidly shared words
of wisdom for the students by
highlighting the importance of
financial background, ethics and
foreign experience.  He encouraged
our future paper science and
chemical engineers by noting
that opportunities are plentiful
due to the aging workforce
and that capital spending
is on the rise due to privatization.
