WRITE Program Mission and History

Program Overview

The WRITE Program is an 18- 22-week rural clinical medical training experience for a pre-selected group of third-year medical students.

Third-year scheduling varies, but typically before going to their WRITE sites students complete:

  • 6 weeks of inpatient Internal Medicine
  • 6 weeks of Surgery
  • 6 weeks of OB/GYN
  • 3 weeks of inpatient Psychiatry/Behavioral Sciences
  • 3 weeks of inpatient Pediatrics

Following the required WRITE Orientation which is held in Seattle just prior to the start of the on-site portion of the program, the students will report to their selected site where they must complete their third-year requirements:

  • 4 weeks of Chronic Care
  • 6 weeks of Family Medicine
  • 6 weeks of Outpatient Internal Medicine (at 22-week sites)
  • 3 weeks of Psychiatry/Behavioral Sciences
  • 3 weeks of Pediatrics
  • 2 weeks Family Medicine Clinical Elective (at 18-week sites)
  • A Community Service Project
  • An exit interview with Dr. Tom Norris, Chair, Dept. of Family Medicine and WRITE Co-Chair, upon the student’s return to Seattle

Following the WRITE site experience, students are ready to begin their fourth year and complete their remaining clinical requirements.
