Okanogan National Forest, Washington
The 2003 UW Herbarium Foray took place in the Okanogan National Forest of north central Washington between July 24-28. Twenty-five people attended the eighth installment of this annual plant collecting trip. Our original plans to camp and focus our collecting in the Chewauch River drainage were scuttled by the Farewell Creek fire that was burning out of control in the adjacent areas of the Pasayten Wilderness. We shifted our center of operations to the five-star Klipchuck campground just west of Mazama, and collected mostly in the alpine areas between Goat Peak and Easy Pass.
Hart's Pass, Slate Peak, Rainy Lake, Maple Pass were some of the areas
in which we collected. A few groups headed east to the wetland areas
in the vicinity of Tiffany Lake, and high elevation areas on Freezeout Ridge.
We were particularly fortunate to be joined by Forest Service botanists
Therese Ohlson and Kelly David from the Methow Valley Ranger District. Therese
was invaluable in providing suggestions for collecting locations, and in
securing collecting and camping permits for the outing.
The steepness of the North Cascades terrain made this the most strenuous Foray to date. Temperature and wind conditions that were ideal for giant forest fires made the going a bit tougher. Nevertheless, after three days we had filled all of the drying presses and had nearly exhausted the supply of cardboard corrugates used for pressing plants. Don Knoke distinguished himself for participating in the three most strenuous outings of the Foray.
This is particularly noteworthy because Don also is one of the more senior
members of the group.
An amendment to the dessert contest constitution passed unanimously. From this foray on, some desserts will be made available each night of the foray, rather than only the night of the spaghetti dinner (thanks to Cindy Spurgeon and Sharon Rodman for an outstanding job on this year's meal!). The Foray's flat tire curse returned, claiming a wheel of a vehicle on one of the outings to Hart's Pass.
