How to Use the SpaceSaver Compacters

* Determine which aisle to open by consulting the cards posted on the ends of the aisle.

* For example: 20. CYPERACEAE Scirpus congdonii NW -- 38. LILIACEAE Smilacina racemosa NW If you wanted to consult specimens in family No. 36, the Juncaceae, you would open this aisle.

* Assuming the aisle of choice is closed, move the yellow switch from its housing on the right side of the gap to the housing on the left side. At the open aisle, move the yellow switch from the left to the right housing. All the rows of cabinets will move to open your aisle of choice.

* Be patient! Sometimes the movement may not start immediately (counting to ten helps), and sometimes the cabinets will move in fits and starts.

* If there is no movement at all, check to be sure that the yellow switches are firmly housed, and that there are no obstructions in the aisle that was open.

* The rows are balanced well enough so that they can be rolled by hand, but this is a method of last resort.  Please see the Collections Manager, the Curator, or Robert Goff (685-3787) if the compacter is not behaving properly.
