    The Research Version (YQOL-R) consists of 3 types of items: Contextual (potentially verifiable; 28 items), perceptual (known only to the individual; 42) and individual specific (top 5 facets most important to individual and 5 facet they would like to change for the better). The initial validation of the instrument was done with adolescents ages 11-18. It showed good psychometric properties and was sensitive to adolescent concerns. The instrument was designed using ground theory and assesses the following 4 domains associated with quality of life:

    • Self: Pertains to the adolescents feelings about him or herself. It has the following facets or subcategories: belief in self, being oneself, mental health, physical health, and spirituality,
    • Relationship: Pertains to the adolescents relations with others. It has the following facets: adult support, caring for others, family relations, freedom, friendships, participation, and peer relations,
    • Environment: Pertains to opportunities and obstacles in the adolescents broader social and cultural milieu. Facets include: engagement and activities, education, neighborhood, monetary resources, personal safety, and view of the future, and
    • General Quality of Life: Pertains to the adolescents sense of how well his or her life is going overall. Facets include: enjoying life, feeling life is worthwhile, and being satisfied with ones life.
